Lo que Victoria y yo aprendimos después de varios “move-ins”

Mi hija comienza su tercer año viviendo en dorm y, después de carros llenos hasta el techo, cajas, organizadores y muchas pruebas, aprendimos una gran lección: no se trata de llevar más, sino de escoger mejor. Estos son nuestros indispensables para hacer de un pequeño dormitorio universitario un verdadero hogar lejos de casa.

Todavía me río cuando veo las fotos de nuestro primer move-in universitario. El carro iba tan lleno que parecía que Victoria y yo estábamos trasladando la casa entera. Maletas, cajas, ropa de cama, organizadores, almohadas y quién sabe cuántas cosas más que en ese momento nos parecían absolutamente indispensables.

Ahora que Victoria comienza su tercer año viviendo en dorm, las dos tenemos un poquito más de experiencia. Hemos aprendido qué utiliza realmente, qué termina ocupando espacio innecesariamente y cuáles son esas pequeñas cosas que pueden hacer una enorme diferencia cuando estudias, duermes, te arreglas y buena parte de tu vida sucede en unos pocos metros cuadrados.

 

Nuestra conclusión podría resumirse así:

1.En un dorm el verdadero lujo no es tener muchas cosas, sino tener las cosas correctas.

2.Un pequeño espacio que también tiene que sentirse como hogar

3.Cada año, cuando ayudamos a Victoria a instalarse, hay un momento en el que la habitación deja de parecer un espacio universitario impersonal y comienza a parecerse a ella.

Le encantan los tonos tierra, el naranja, las texturas cálidas y esos pequeños objetos que cuentan historias. Basta mirar las fotos de sus habitaciones: una manta naranja sobre la cama, cojines, un rug acogedor, fotografías, recuerdos y lucecitas que por la noche cambian completamente el ambiente.

 

Pero antes de decorar viene algo todavía más importante: organizar.

Una de las grandes lecciones que hemos aprendido es a aprovechar cada centímetro. El espacio debajo de la cama se convierte en storage; las paredes y puertas ayudan a organizar; un carrito vertical puede guardar desde útiles hasta productos personales; y los cajones necesitan divisiones para que el orden dure algo más que la primera semana.

Aquí Amazon se ha convertido en una herramienta muy práctica para nosotras, porque podemos encontrar desde los básicos para instalar el dorm hasta esas pequeñas cosas que Victoria necesita ir reponiendo durante el semestre.

Los 10 indispensables de Victoria

Este año revisamos la selección Top 100+ Dorm Essentials de Amazon pensando no solamente en qué comprar, sino en lo que nuestra propia experiencia nos ha demostrado que realmente funciona: 

1. Un purificador de aire compacto. En un espacio pequeño donde se duerme, estudia y pasa buena parte del día, nos parece una buena opción. La clave es encontrar uno compacto que cumpla su función sin robarnos demasiado espacio.

2. Una cafetera pequeña. La Keurig K-Mini Mate nos encantó por su tamaño y porque encontramos una en un precioso tono verde y terracota, absolutamente dentro de la paleta de Victoria. Para esas mañanas en las que cada minuto antes de clase cuenta, una cafetera individual resulta muy práctica.

3. Un buen mattress topper. Despuc de varios move-ins, hacer cómoda la cama se convirtió en prioridad. Un Linenspa Mattress Topper puede agregar una capa extra de confort a la típica cama universitaria. Eso sí: antes de comprar cualquier ropa de cama o topper, hay que verificar las medidas que utiliza la cama.

4. Sábanas y ropa de cama. La cama ocupa buena parte de la habitación y termina marcando visualmente el espacio. Un buen juego de sábanas, almohadas y una manta cálida son básicos. Y aquí dejamos entrar la personalidad: en el caso de Victoria, crema, terracota, naranja y tonos tierra.

5. Buenas toallas. Encontramos, entre otras opciones, los juegos Lacoste Grand Slam. Nuestro aprendizaje aquí ha sido muy sencillo: es preferible tener las necesarias y de buena calidad que llenar el clóset con juegos que después no se utilizan.

6. Storage, storage y más storage. Si tuviera que escoger una categoría indispensable sería ésta. Contenedores Amazon Basics, cajas para debajo de la cama, divisores de cajones y soluciones apilables permiten aprovechar espacios que de otra manera se desperdician.

7. Organizadores verticales. Nos gustaron también los organizadores colgantes GRANNY SAYS, porque permiten aprovechar el espacio del clóset hacia arriba en lugar de seguir ocupando el poco piso disponible. En un dorm, cada centímetro cuenta.

8. Una jarra Brita. La Brita Metro es otra de esas soluciones pequeñas y prácticas para tener agua disponible en la habitación sin depender constantemente de botellas individuales.

9. Lucecitas para crear ambiente. Aquí tenemos pruebas fotográficas de cuánto le gustan a Victoria. Encontramos unas luces LED de estrellas en tono cálido, muy en el espíritu de las que ya ha utilizado en sus habitaciones. Cuando cae la noche, una iluminación más cálida puede transformar completamente un dorm.

10. Command de 3M. Otro pequeño gran aliado para decorar una habitación universitaria: permite colocar fotos y pequeños objetos sin tener que perforar las paredes. Siempre recomiendo comprobar primero las reglas específicas de cada residencia.

También encontramos otros pequeños salvavidas que pueden resultar muy útiles durante el año: cargadores Anker, perchas delgadas, audífonos, Tide Pods y hasta una plancha compacta.

No significa que haya que comprarlo todo. De hecho, ésa es precisamente nuestra siguiente lección. No hay que comprarlo todo antes del primer día. Creo que ésta es la diferencia más grande entre nuestro primer move-in y el tercero.

La primera vez una quiere anticiparse a absolutamente todo. Después descubres que es mucho más inteligente comenzar con los verdaderos básicos y dejar que la vida cotidiana vaya revelando qué hace falta. Y ahí Amazon nos resulta especialmente práctico durante todo el año, no solamente durante el regreso a la universidad.

Back to College: What Victoria and I Have Learned After Several Move-Ins

My daughter is starting her third year living in a dorm, and after cars packed to the roof, endless boxes, organizers, and plenty of trial and error, we’ve learned one important lesson: it’s not about bringing more—it’s about choosing better. Here are our essentials for turning a small college dorm room into a true home away from home.

I still laugh when I look at the pictures from our first college move-in. The car was so packed it looked as though Victoria and I were moving our entire house. Suitcases, boxes, bedding, organizers, pillows, and who knows how many other things that, at the time, seemed absolutely essential.

Now that Victoria is beginning her third year living in a dorm, we both have a little more experience. We’ve learned what she actually uses, what ends up taking up unnecessary space, and which small things can make an enormous difference when you study, sleep, get ready, and live so much of your life within just a few square feet.

Our conclusion can be summed up very simply: in a dorm, the real luxury isn’t having lots of things—it’s having the right things.

2.Every year, when I help Victoria settle in, there comes a moment when the room stops looking like an impersonal college dorm and starts looking like her.

3.She loves earth tones, orange, warm textures, and those little objects that tell a story. You can see it in the photos of her rooms: an orange throw across the bed, pillows, a cozy rug, photographs, keepsakes, and string lights that completely transform the atmosphere at night.

But before decorating comes something even more important: organization.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is how to make every inch count. The area under the bed becomes storage; walls and doors can help with organization; a vertical cart can hold everything from school supplies to personal-care products; and drawers need dividers if you want the organization to last longer than the first week!

Amazon has become a very practical resource for us because we can find everything from the basics needed to set up her dorm to the smaller everyday items Victoria needs to replenish throughout the semester.

This year, we looked through Amazon’s Top 100+ Dorm Essentials, thinking not only about what to buy, but also about what our own experience has taught us actually works.

 

1. A compact air purifier

In a small room where you sleep, study, and spend so much of your day, we think this is a great option. The key is finding something compact that does its job without taking up precious space.

2. A small coffee maker

We loved the Keurig K-Mini Mate because of its compact size and because we found it in a beautiful terracotta shade that fits perfectly into Victoria’s color palette. For those mornings when every minute before class counts, a single-serve coffee maker can be a great little ally.

After several move-ins, making the bed comfortable has become a priority. A Linenspa Mattress Topper can add an extra layer of comfort to a typical college bed. One important tip: always confirm the exact mattress dimensions provided by the residence hall before purchasing bedding or a topper.

4. Sheets and bedding

The bed takes up a large part of a dorm room and visually sets the tone for the entire space. A good set of sheets, comfortable pillows, and a cozy throw are essentials.This is also where personality comes in. For Victoria, that means cream, terracotta, orange, and warm earth tones.

6. Storage, storage, and more storage. If I had to choose one truly essential category, this might be it. Amazon Basics Storage Bins, under-bed containers, drawer dividers, and stackable solutions can turn otherwise wasted areas into valuable storage space.

7. Vertical organizers

We also liked the GRANNY SAYS Hanging Organizers, which allow you to use vertical closet space instead of taking up more of that very limited floor space. In a dorm, every inch counts.

8. A Brita pitcher

The Brita Metro is another simple, practical solution for keeping water available in the room without constantly relying on individual water bottles.

9. String lights to create atmosphere. We have photographic proof of how much Victoria loves these. 

We found warm-white LED star string lights, similar in spirit to the ones she has already used to decorate her dorm. At night, a little warm lighting can completely change the feeling of the room.

10. 3M Command products

Another small but mighty dorm-room helper. 3M Command products make it possible to hang photos and lightweight decorative pieces without drilling holes into the walls. Of course, always check the specific rules of your residence hall before decorating.

We also found a few other little lifesavers that can come in handy throughout the year: Anker chargers, slim hangers, headphones, Tide Pods, and even a compact iron.

That doesn’t mean you need to buy everything. In fact, that brings me to our next—and perhaps most important—lesson. You Don’t Have to Buy Everything Before Move-In Day

I think this is the biggest difference between our first move-in and our third.

The first time around, you feel as though you need to anticipate absolutely everything. Eventually, you realize that it makes much more sense to start with the true essentials and let everyday life show you what is actually missing.

And this is where Amazon becomes particularly useful to us throughout the entire year, not just during back-to-college season.

Thanks to my Prime membership, Victoria can make smart purchases based on what she actually needs from month to month—from shampoo, beauty, and personal-care products to laundry detergent, school supplies, snacks, chargers, or any of those everyday basics that inevitably run out.

For me, it also means that I can continue helping her from home, but in a different way. I’m no longer the mom who needs to prepare absolutely everything for her. Now she identifies what she needs, makes decisions, and I support her along the way.

When I look back at that photograph of Victoria and me standing in front of a car that could barely close, it makes me smile.
