Nacida el 19 de enero de 1946 en Tennessee, en el seno de una familia humilde, Dolly aprendió desde muy temprano que los sueños también pueden nacer en lugares pequeños. Con una voz inconfundible, una personalidad arrolladora y una estética que convirtió en su ADN o sello propio, consiguió abrirse camino en una industria en la que las mujeres tuvieron que luchar durante décadas por ser escuchadas y reconocidas.

Canciones como “Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You” y “9 to 5” trascendieron generaciones y fronteras, convirtiéndola en una de las grandes figuras de la música popular estadounidense. Pero reducir a Dolly Parton a sus éxitos musicales sería quedarse apenas con una parte de su historia.

Esta icónica cantante, compositora, actriz, empresaria y filántropa estadounidense falleció el 25 de agosto de 2026, a los 80 años, dejando detrás una trayectoria de más de siete décadas y un legado que va mucho más allá de la música. Pero quizás una de las facetas más admirables de Dolly fue su manera de entender la fama y la riqueza: no como un punto de llegada, sino como una oportunidad para ayudar a otros.

En 1988 creó la Dollywood Foundation y en 1995 puso en marcha Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, un programa inspirado en su padre, quien no sabía leer ni escribir. Lo que comenzó como una iniciativa local en su Tennessee natal se convirtió en un proyecto internacional de promoción de la lectura y la educación infantil y durante más de tres décadas, ha entregado más de 300 millones de libros a niños en diferentes países, convirtiéndose en uno de los mayores programas de distribución gratuita de libros para la primera infancia.

Ese gesto resume buena parte de la filosofía de Dolly que, si la vida te da la posibilidad de crecer, procura que alguien más también pueda hacerlo. Su filantropía también alcanzó la investigación médica, la atención infantil, la ayuda ante desastres y distintas iniciativas educativas. Incluso realizó una donación de un millón de dólares que contribuyó a financiar la investigación de la vacuna contra el COVID-19.

Una mujer que hizo de su estilo una declaración

Dolly también entendió algo que la moda conoce muy bien y es ver la identidad como una forma de poder.  Su cabello voluminoso, brillo, tacones, siluetas femeninas, colores intensos, uñas impecables y una estética deliberadamente exuberante fueron parte de su imagen que nunca intentó esconder.

Mientras muchos esperaban que una mujer redujera su presencia para ser tomada en serio, Dolly hizo exactamente lo contrario, presumiendo su personalidad y una imagen divertida, femenina, sensual, teatral y absolutamente reconocible. Y detrás de aquel personaje lleno de lentejuelas siempre existió una mujer consciente de quién era, de dónde venía y de lo que quería comunicar.

Su historia también quedó profundamente ligada a Tennessee y a Hollywood, el parque temático que ayudó a convertir en uno de los grandes atractivos turísticos de la región. Pero, más que construir una marca, Dolly construyó un universo alrededor de sus valores en donde la familia, el entretenimiento, trabajo, imaginación y comunidad, hacían parte de su vida cotidiana. 

Incluso después de alcanzar una fama internacional, Dolly Parton mantuvo siempre una conexión profunda y permanente con sus raíces. Y quizá ahí reside una de las grandes lecciones de su vida: crecer no significa olvidar de dónde vienes, sino llevar tus raíces contigo mientras conquistas nuevos caminos.

Una de mis películas favoritas es Magnolias de Acero (1989), que protagonizó junto a Julia Roberts y que tiene como uno de sus escenarios principales una peluquería. Allí, Dolly se mostraba fiel a ese estilo que ya hacía parte de su ADN: el cabello voluminoso al más puro estilo ochentero, los labios rojos, la silueta marcada y esa inconfundible feminidad que terminó convirtiéndola en un verdadero ícono de estilo de aquella época.

Pero más allá de su imagen, Dolly eligió siempre la humanidad por encima de todo. Supo ser extraordinaria sin dejar de mostrarse cercana; su humor, su generosidad, su capacidad para reírse de sí misma y esa manera directa y espontánea de hablar hicieron que millones de personas sintieran que, detrás de la estrella internacional, existía una mujer auténtica, sensible y profundamente humana.

This iconic American singer, songwriter, actress, entrepreneur, and philanthropist passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind a career spanning more than seven decades and a legacy that goes far beyond music. Perhaps one of Dolly’s most admirable qualities, however, was the way she understood fame and wealth: not as a destination, but as an opportunity to help others.

In 1988, she founded the Dollywood Foundation, and in 1995, she launched Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program inspired by her father, who could neither read nor write. What began as a local initiative in her native Tennessee grew into an international project promoting literacy and early childhood education. For more than three decades, it has distributed more than 300 million books to children in different countries, becoming one of the largest free book-gifting programs for young children.

That gesture captures much of Dolly’s philosophy: if life gives you the opportunity to grow, make sure someone else has the chance to grow, too. Her philanthropy also extended to medical research, children’s services, disaster relief, and various educational initiatives. She even made a $1 million donation that helped fund research toward a COVID-19 vaccine.

A Woman Who Turned Her Style Into a Statement

Dolly also understood something the fashion world knows very well: identity can be a form of power. Her voluminous hair, sparkle, high heels, feminine silhouettes, bold colors, impeccable nails, and deliberately exuberant aesthetic became an essential part of her image—one she never tried to hide.

Her story also remained deeply connected to Tennessee and to the theme park she helped transform into one of the region’s major tourist attractions. But more than simply building a brand, Dolly created an entire universe around her values, where family, entertainment, hard work, imagination, and community were part of everyday life.

Even after achieving international fame, Dolly Parton always maintained a deep and lasting connection to her roots. And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons of her life: growing does not mean forgetting where you came from; it means carrying your roots with you as you venture down new paths.

One of my favorite films is Steel Magnolias (1989), which she starred in alongside Julia Roberts and which is set, in part, in a beauty salon. There, Dolly remained true to the style that had already become part of her DNA: voluminous, quintessentially ’80s hair, red lips, a defined silhouette, and that unmistakable femininity that ultimately made her a true style icon of the era.

But beyond her image, Dolly always chose humanity above all else. She knew how to be extraordinary without ever seeming distant; her humor, generosity, ability to laugh at herself, and direct, spontaneous way of speaking made millions of people feel that behind the international superstar was an authentic, sensitive, and deeply human woman.

And perhaps that is why so many women found inspiration in her. Not simply to imitate her hair, red lips, or distinctive way of dressing, but to discover something far more valuable: true beauty begins on the inside, but it is also expressed outwardly. Dolly understood that feeling good about yourself, nurturing your essence, and embracing your identity are all part of the balance that makes us truly beautiful.
